PM Sermon: 11/20/2022

The Lake of Fire (Rev. 19, 20, 21, NASB)

Bro Avery Hines

This evening I want to take you back to 1985, back to the old west and part of the gold rush era. Clint Eastwood played an un-named rider from where no one really knew.

The rider appeared out of almost nowhere as a young woman quoted, at least, part of Revelation chapter 6 …

Rev 6:8 I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name Death, and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, and famine, and plague, and by the wild animals of the earth. The KJV renders this verse: (And I looked and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him).

Rev 19:11  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Rev 19:12  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Rev 19:13  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Rev 19:14  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

Rev 19:15  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

I know you remember the song; His truth keeps marching on …

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on

You know the; Abraham Lincoln; the battle hymn of the republic …

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He sift out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on

Again, when a lot of us do think about Abraham Lincoln, but …

On June 8, 1968, as the 21-car funeral train bearing the body of assassinated U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy from New York to Washington crept through Baltimore, a lone mourner in the crowd began slowly singing, Mine eyes have seen the glory.

They sang it at the funeral of Winston Churchill in 1965 and at the Washington National Cathedral after the terrorist attacks of 2001. And Martin Luther King Jr.’s last public address — his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech the night before his assassination — ended with “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”

It seems like a song they use to sing when it felt like our backs were against the wall. His truth keeps marching on.

Rev 19:20  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Some wonder if this is talking about a literal lake of fire. They want to believe this has some prophetic meaning; perhaps, but there is one thing I do know, anyone can create a lake of fire. Even at some of our homes we have fire pits in our backyards, and almost everyone has a barbecue grill in which we create enough heat to cook raw meat to perfection.

Have you ever, even once, on a cool or cold autumn night sat by a fire, or even a fire pit? You just sat there, especially if you were in the direction the wind was blowing the flame; remember getting warm, or so hot you had to move back a bit, and sometimes even away from the flame altogether. Those of us who are a little older, because older people need salvation too, we remember both kerosine stoves and wood stoves. A good kerosine stove, or a good wood stove, would chase you not only out of room but there were times when it would chase you out of the house completely.

Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. Rev 20:12  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Rev 20:13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Rev 20:14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Rev 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

All we want, all that really care for you want, is for your name to be found in the book of life. My challenge to anyone listening or watching is this; grab hold of something hot, not warm, not kind of hot, something hot; see how long you can hold onto it. Go to Hawaii, to Kilauea, when it is spouting lava; see how close you can get; you’ll know; how long you can stand there?

Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Did you hear verse 8?

Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Remember back a while, in the evening, we talked about “What Lying Does”. Remember I read this verse from another lesson I had read by Bro Carey? His lesson was on lying as well, so we know what lying does and where liars go from this very verse. All liars shall have their part in the lake which burn with fire and brimstone.

Verse 8 also talks about who will also take part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone …

The fearful and the unbelieving - Who have not courage to face the difficulties which an open profession of my religion requires, and therefore do not overcome; that is how that verse is broken down.

Heb 10:26  For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

Hear, believe, repent, confess that you believe Jesus Christ is the Son of the God, put on Christ in baptism

Take advantage of Christ’s dying for you on the cross.

Don’t find out there is a lake of fire when you right in the middle of it.
