Being Made so much Better than the Angels (Heb 1:4)

Bro Avery Hines

In the King James and maybe some other bibles Hebrews chapter one has a (subtitle) for this chapter. In this case it is “The Supremacy of God’s Son.”

God’s son is “SUPREME”!

Let’s look at that word supreme…

Dictionaries define the word as an adjective meaning (of authority or an office, or someone holding it) superior to all others.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines supreme as “highest in rank or authority” or “highest in degree or quality.” The supreme of something is its ultimate.

Jesus is the ultimate in power, glory, authority, and importance, and that’s not something new. Look at what Isaiah said some 700 years before Jesus was even born…

Isa 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty

God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Supreme; highest ranking, highest, chief, head – (Col 1:18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.), preeminent, and the greatest.

We sing that song; highest; greatest,

I am resolved no longer to linger torn by the world’s delight things that are higher, things that are nobler, these have allured my side

I will hasten to thee, hasten so glad and free Jesus greatest, highest, I will come to thee

Heb 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners (don’t allow the King James Bible to intimidate you; think of it as a study guide)

“Long ago in many ways and at many times” spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person,

Col 1:12  Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Col 1:18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Col 1:19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Col 1:21  And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Who, is the image; likeness, depiction, portrayal of the invisible God; and the express; exact (not approximated in any way; precise image of God’s person,

and upholding all things by the word of his power,

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2  The same was in the beginning with God.

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Gen 1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Gen 1:3  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Heb 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Heb 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Heb 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Then the Hebrew writer; in Hebrews chapter two…

Remember; being so much better than the angels…

I’m going to break this down from the Easy-Read Bible…

Heb 2:1  So we must be more careful to follow what we were taught. We must be careful so that we will not be pulled away from the true way.

Heb 2:2  The teaching that God spoke through angels was shown to be true. And every time his people did something against that teaching, they were punished for what they did. They were punished when they did not obey that teaching.

Heb 2:3  So surely we also will be punished if we don't pay attention to the salvation we have that is so great. It was the Lord Jesus who first told people about it. And those who heard him proved to us that it is true.

Heb 2:4  God also proved it by using miraculous signs, wonders, and all kinds of miracles. And he proved it by giving people various gifts through the Holy Spirit in just the way he wanted.

So, God did what, by doing what?

Act 2:22  Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Act 2:37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

If you’re not a member of the body of Christ…

You need to resolve not to linger

You need to hasten unto Him

You need to come to thee

Then Peter said, repent and be baptized; notice he said repent first. Notice that from Acts 2:14 to Acts 2:41 is highlighted as (Peter’s Sermon at Pentecost); so, he preached unto them God’s word. Look, it’s in there;

Act 2:23  and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Act 2:24  Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
